Taking a stand for health!

The health benefits for utilizing standing desks are straight forward, but not only are they functional they are also fashionable, at least according to Treehouse Coworking’s awesome member Kara, “standing desks are very in and all the rage right now.”

“I do a lot of yoga and the teachers will often start class with lots of poses that counteract the fact that you’re sitting at your desk all day,” said Kara Leary, software engineer at Thinkful, an online coding academy. “I’m always like, ‘I wasn’t sitting all day,’ so I feel like I’m ahead of the game.”

Kara, in April, became a member at Treehouse Coworking, a shared office space in Kailua, where she rents a private desk for her job. One of the ways Treehouse Coworking promotes a healthy lifestyle is by providing variable electronic adjusting desks, for members who rent a private desk, which sets its height based on the users preference. Kara says the desks help her focus, “when I work on projects I like to stand up and go into the zone.”

Beside focus, she says standing desks helps her to stay alert, “I feel like I’m more engaged when I’m standing,” Kara said. “It’s easier to not doze off when you are working on something not as riveting.”

Besides metal focus, standing desks can help to contribute to an active lifestyle which can help to combat diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer (especially of the colon and breast), and premature death, according to the Harvard medical school.

Not only do standing desks combat metabolic conditions, but they can also alleviate physiological conditions like bad posture, anterior pelvic tilt, tight hamstrings, and a weakened core from long term sitting, according to the Personal Trainer Development Center.
